Floating Architecture
Floating Architecture
Cardboard, spray paint, thread, hot glue, fishing string
I chose to use Gothic architecture with Art Nouveau architecture. While doing my research they both had aspects that I really liked, such as the organic shapes of Art Nouveau and the repeating patterns seen in Gothic architecture. When starting this project, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do. I tried to replicate some of the organic shapes of Art Nouveau and ending up liking the scraps rather than the actual shape. I replicated the shape and was able to make the smaller top shape and really liked it. From there I replicated that but bigger. I wanted to try to incorporate Gothic architectures stained glass by weaving in thread in the colors of stained glass. I did this on two sides of the sculpture because I didn't want it to over power the shape or texture. The texture of the sculpture is rough and grey from a textured spray paint. To be able to have this work on cardboard, I had to paint a base layer of gesso to prevent the cardboard from soaking and falling apart.
